Why Sump Pumps Fail When You Need Them
Sump pumps sit idle for weeks, then have to run hard during a storm. That is when weak switches and worn motors give out.
- Power outages during the same storm that brings the water
- Stuck float switches that never tell the pump to start
- Clogged intakes from silt and debris in the pit
- Old motors that burn out under heavy load
- Frozen discharge lines in winter
Check This First
1. Is the pump plugged in, and is the outlet or breaker on? 2. Is the float free to move? 3. Is the pit clear of debris? 4. Is the discharge line outside clear and not frozen?
If water keeps rising, move belongings and call. Do not stand in water near a plugged-in pump.

In the Harrisburg area, heavy storms often come with power outages. A battery backup pump sits in the same pit and takes over when the main pump fails or the power goes out. For finished basements, it is cheap insurance.
